Commentary and Opinions

Government computing has undergone rapid change in recent years. Within the data center, multiple drivers are pushing cloud computing to the forefront, including technology policies such as “Cloud First” and general austerity mandates aimed at eliminating large infrastructure or asset ownership and management. Defense and military applications are also changing, as the applications that a warfighter utilizes at the tactical edge are becoming increasingly compute-intensive to enhance and extend combat cognition, efficiency and effectiveness.
According to combat fatality statistics, most in-theater deaths occur within the “golden hour,” the first hour after traumatic injury. Combat medics are the first responders on the frontlines and their medical care increases a warfighter’s chance of survival during this critical time.
To outfit its personnel in Afghanistan with what are known as “low profile concealment systems,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection intends to award a sole source contract to High Threat Concealment, of Newport News, VA, to supply this kind of gear.
As the Department of Defense (DoD) continues to turn to the Cloud to improve computing efficiency, its adoption of innovative technologies is enabling DoD to secure high performance solutions while also reducing costs.
Since Afghanistan was officially designated a “major non-NATO ally” of the U.S. by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last July, the stage has been set for continued cooperation between the two countries, as well as priority delivery of military hardware and aid, even as international troops are on a path to withdraw by the end of 2014. Already, more than $80 billion in non-military aid from the U.S. has been given to Afghanistan in the past 10 years.
