Commentary and Opinions

It’s hard to fathom that as late as 2012 the U.S. State Department estimated 27 million people around the world are trapped in a life of slavery. Recent high-profile news stories have served as a painful reminder that even in the U.S. individuals are held against their will, subjected to forced labor, prostitution or other criminal activity. According to a 2013 Congressional Research Service report, as many as 100,000 children in the U.S. may be victims of domestic human trafficking.
When an earthquake and tsunami damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in March 2011, Japanese nuclear safety experts were quick to call for potassium iodide to be rushed to people in affected areas. Potassium iodide, or KI, lowers the risk of people developing thyroid cancer as a result of radioactive iodine exposure.
It is possible to forecast the types of warfare that one’s terrorist adversary is likely to conduct, whether as an organized group or as “lone wolf” operatives. Such a forecasting capability is especially crucial when complete information about one’s terrorist adversary is lacking. This is important because several recent high visibility terrorist attacks could have been pre-empted and thwarted if the intelligence and law enforcement agencies that were tracking these groups and operatives had possessed such a forecasting capability.

While the EU proposal has many useful recommendations, it falls short in a number of areas. Specifically, it adds new regulations that will negatively impact the Internet economy, limits the potential for future innovation and imposes excessive burdens on organizations.
