Commentary and Opinions

December 8 - Among the men suspected of helping carry out the Nov. 13, 2015 Paris terrorist attacks is Samy Amimour, a 28-year-old French citizen who already had been charged with terrorist conspiracy in 2012. He is not the first person to be charged with a terrorism-related crime and then later to be associated with a serious attack. In January 2015, two brothers — Chérif and Saïd Kouachi – killed 12 people at the Paris offices of the Charlie Hebdo satire magazine.
Saint Leo, FL, October 28 - A new nationwide survey by the Saint Leo University Polling Institute found 86.8 percent of respondents either strongly or somewhat agreed that police officers should be required to wear body cameras to better assist in reviewing difficult incidents, while 79 percent said the U.S. Department of Justice should continue to open investigations of community police departments following controversial incidents.
Washington, DC, September 17 - Representing more than 1,100 police chiefs, sheriffs and prosecutors, members of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids are meeting with lawmakers in Congress on Thursday, September 17. Their message: states across the nation must continue efforts to reduce the number of juvenile offenders in state-run facilities and focus instead on family interventions that have been proven to reduce juvenile crime and save taxpayer dollars.
Washington, DC, September 11 - Today, the nation marks the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that took the lives of some 3,000 Americans. In the 14 years that have passed, the world has become an even more dangerous place, while in many ways our defenses against another major terrorist attack have been weakened, warns the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).
Atlanta, GA, August 17 - The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today announced the formation of a new campaign to improve legal response to hate crimes across the United States. 50 States Against Hate: An Initiative for Stronger Hate Crime Laws will work toward the passage of hate crime laws in the five states which do not have them – Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Wyoming – while simultaneously seeking to make existing hate crime laws in the other 45 states more inclusive and comprehensive.
