CBP to purchase training goggles that simulate alcohol and drug impairment

Fatal Vision goggles

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol plans to purchase 260 pairs of Fatal Vision simulator goggles which vividly demonstrate the concept of impairment and the dangers of alcohol and other drug misuse and abuse.

The goggles, which come in a variety of models, are supplied by Innocorp., Ltd., of Verona, WI, which says its goggles “distort vision and cause reactions that mimic behaviors exhibited by someone under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.”

CBP has issued a 100 percent small business set-aside solicitation for the bronze version of the simulator goggles which simulate a “moderate” level of impairment.

The solicitation was issued by CBP’s contracting office in Indianapolis, IN. Further information is available from Patricia Gibson-Anderson, a contract specialist, at 317-614-4971 or patricia.gibson-anderson@dhs.gov.

Prospective bidders have until July 27 to submit their offers.

Innocorp introduced the Fatal Vision goggles 14 years ago. “Viewing through the goggles is rather clear, but confusing to the mind,” the company explains. “The wearer experiences a loss of equilibrium, which is one of the effects of intoxication. Both the wearer and those observing are convinced that such impairment makes activities with known risks, such a driving vehicles, very dangerous.”

CBP did not make clear precisely how it intends to use the 260 pairs of goggles it will buy.
