Passport Systems develops first-ever handheld networked radiation detector
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 31, 2016 Passport Systems Inc. has produced the first of its kind handheld, networked radiation detector. The SmartShield™ Networked Radiation Detection System will advance security at large scale venues in the United States, as well as around the world, and will better protect populations and property from CBRNe threats.
The SmartShield system provides seamless integration of individual detectors into a coordinated network, while its advanced algorithms use the information provided by the network to perform improved radiation detection, localization, identification, and continuous mapping of the background area.
Domestically, the SmartShield technology has been used to beef up security at the NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament in Houston, at the Boston Marathon, and other crowd gathering events, such as NASCAR races in New Hampshire. Internationally, it is being marketed for use at celebrations, soccer matches, concerts, as well as airports, and ports.
"The CBRNe Convergence show is a rare opportunity to talk with domestic local, state and federal security officials, law enforcement authorities from around the world and global private sector security interests about how Passport Systems' innovative radiation detection technology can improve security," said William McLendon, Passport's COO, who is showcasing the technology at Booth 47 in the exhibition hall during CBRNe Convergence 2016 in San Diego from October 31 to November 2.
"Our technology is the best available at detecting and responding to threats caused by Dirty Bombs and other nuclear and radiative devices," said Mr. McLendon, who is available to do media interviews at CBRNe Convergence 2016. "This technology is the counter balance to the growing sophistication of terrorist groups seeking to do harm. The challenge now is to get this technology into the hands of law enforcement, companies, countries who need it."
SmartShield is comprised of small gamma-radiation detectors that collect radiation data and transmit the information wirelessly through smartphones, forming a network that allows security forces to simultaneously respond to any threats. While on routine patrols, security and law enforcement officers collect background radiation data. When gamma radiation is detected, an alert and GPS coordinates are sent throughout the network, to a central command station, and to responding law enforcement personnel.
Passport Systems Inc., which is based in N. Billerica, MA, is also producing a game-changing cargo scanner that will effectively and efficiently help protect property and populations from nuclear terrorists and CBRNe threats.
