With security awareness, threat assessment, and risk analysis extending into new areas like international traveler health screening, vigilance at the doors of elementary schools, and intensified subway passenger safety, it’s important for government security professionals everywhere to keep their knowledge and credentials continuously up-to-date.
More than 640 million domestic air passengers hoped for a timely departure in 2012, and yet few ever considered a key part of the security process that makes timely departures possible: screening of baggage that goes into the “hold” of an airplane (more commonly known in the U.S. as “checked” baggage.) 
In Washington, attention has shifted from the daily grind towards a hyper-partisan presidential campaign. Battle lines are sharply cast between Republican challenger, Governor Mitt Romney, and the incumbent, President Barack Obama. While all eyes are on the economy, national security challenges abound. Obama’s killing of Bin Laden and targeting terrorists with Predator strikes argues his prowess on terrorism. Iran’s nuclear weapon pursuits are hindered by cyber-sabotage.
High-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors are the recognized gold standard for detection and identification of characteristic gamma rays from nuclear or radiological sources. No other detector comes close to matching their extremely high resolution and sensitivity. However, until recently, their use outside the laboratory has been limited. A number of challenges had to be overcome before they could be deployed routinely in the field.
