Commentary and Opinions

Hybrid-Cloud computing, the combination of private, community and public Cloud infrastructures, delivers advantages. But it also introduces risks, particularly around privileged users and trusted insider threats.
Over the past 12 months, governments at all levels continued the creation of a more citizen-centric model, with technology at the heart of their efforts. As federal government agencies close the book on this fiscal year and look ahead to the next, efficiency, connectivity, scalability and security will continue to dominate technology plans and budget discussions.
Today’s threat actors are becoming more sophisticated, advanced and diverse. Widespread virus and worm outbreaks are no longer the only worries for IT administrators; they must now also defend their infrastructure against malicious insiders and the Advanced Persistent Threat (APT).
It’s hard to fathom that as late as 2012 the U.S. State Department estimated 27 million people around the world are trapped in a life of slavery. Recent high-profile news stories have served as a painful reminder that even in the U.S. individuals are held against their will, subjected to forced labor, prostitution or other criminal activity. According to a 2013 Congressional Research Service report, as many as 100,000 children in the U.S. may be victims of domestic human trafficking.
In just six years, North Louisiana has created a fast-growing cyber cluster in a region historically dominated by manufacturing, oil and gas, and agricultural sectors. The catalyst for this rapid progress stems from the combined vision of local and state leaders to diversify the region’s economic base and develop a knowledge-based workforce for the expanding cyber sector.

Abstract:

Network Access Control and 802.1x - Advantages, Constraints and Capabilities

Written by distinguished security industry analyst Pete Lindstrom of Spire Security

The industry has been blurring the differences between 802.1x and NAC. Some believe that 802.1x is sufficient and similar enough to a full NAC solution to start down the path of implementation. What organizations often find is that the 802.1x story seems fairly simple and easy, but the deployment is much more difficult. This paper examines the fully 802.1x and NAC details such as:

    * What is 802.1x?
    * What important features are missing from 802.1x?
    * What alternatives exist to 802.1x and why?
    * What are the hidden costs associated with rolling out NAC?
    * How can commercial enterprises and government organizations benefit from NAC?
